Episode 3: The Unbroken Girls

February 17, 2018

In today’s episode, I do a quick review of an incredible book by two incredible women: Regina Calcaterra and Rosie Maloney.

Girl Unbroken

Girl Unbroken is the true story of Rosie’s life. She had a terrible stint in foster care, but the truly terrible times were with her own mother. If you can handle a lot of truth, a lot of sadness, and a handful of F-bombs, go and read this book and let me know what you think.

But, I start this episode with the confession that I am a TERRIBLE book reader. Or, more specifically, that I am a terrible book finisher. I referenced a book called Finish by Jon Acuff. I first heard of this book on the That Sounds Fun Podcast with Annie F Downs. Exact episode linked, so you can skip reading the book too! Just kidding, I actually just bought it on my Audible account. So I will let you know how that book went when I FINISH it.

Etched in Sand

The first book I ever read about a real life foster experience was Etched in Sand by Regina Calcaterra. This is a memoir of Regina’s life, and was a serious dose of reality that some people lead really terrible lives – in foster care, but also with their bio families, in this beautiful country of the United States of America. This is also an incredible read, so grab this book as well.

My favorite part of these two books is the ‘happy ending’ they both have. Successful women, contributing to society, with loving families, despite an upbringing that would have broken many. One day, I would love to have these unbreakable women on the podcast!

The Good Word of the Day

But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.

1 Timothy 6:6-8

We have some basic needs, and kids have even more basic needs. Can we meet some of those needs for others today? Let’s be thankful for the food and clothing we have. But do we have more?

The thing that Rosie needed, and so many need – is kindness and care. Let’s be kind and care for one another’s need.

Thanks so much for tuning in my friends.
